Sankt Annæ Plads is a welcoming public space in the heart of the city.

The historic square of Sankt Annæ Plads has been part of Copenhagen since the 1700s. Back then it served as the departure point for the city's first horse-drawn trams, while today it functions as an attractive public space for both locals and visitors.

Sankt Annæ Plads is located next to the Danish royal family's winter residence, Amalienborg Palace, and only a few minutes' walk from Nyhavn and the city centre. Following a major renovation, the square now offers a range of functions and experiences. Not only is it a place for relaxation, socialising and everyday city life, it also forms part of the city's efforts to manage heavy rainfall and reduce the impact of cloudbursts.

Over the past decade, Copenhagen has experienced several major cloudbursts, creating new challenges for streets and buildings across the city. During a cloudburst in 2011, Sankt Annæ Plads was rapidly flooded, causing significant damage to nearby properties. To address this, the square was redesigned and lowered, with drainage systems that help direct rainwater towards the harbour and away from surrounding streets and buildings.

The renovation has also transformed the square into a more inviting place to spend time. Today, visitors can enjoy green surroundings alongside the lively atmosphere of the city. With benches, a playground and a pétanque court, there is something for all ages.

The street itself has been narrowed, helping to reduce traffic and create more space for pedestrians. Wider pavements have also allowed cafés and restaurants to expand their outdoor seating areas. The result is a public space that successfully combines everyday city life, rainwater management and improved opportunities to spend time outdoors.
