Winter Break at Esrum Abbey – Folklore, Creatures of the Dark & Dusk Walks

During winter break, Esrum Abbey invites families into the world of folklore and mythical beings. Discover tales of will-o'-the-wisps, elf-folk, and water spirits in the exhibition Eye for Landscape, join creative activities – and end the day with an atmospheric dusk walk through the abbey’s winter landscape.

A Magical Winter Break of Myth and Darkness

Step Into Nordic Folklore

In Eye for Landscape, families explore the stories of light and darkness that shaped everyday life long ago. The activities are aimed at children aged 6–12, but everyone with a curious mind is welcome.

Hands-On Workshops and Living Legends

Get creative and dive into the stories behind the mysterious beings from Nordic folk belief:

  • Will-o'-the-wisps: Follow the flickering lights in the marsh and learn how they once were seen as helpful – for a price.

  • Elf-folk: Discover the realm of the elves, craft magical lanterns, and learn about the creatures thought to dwell between forest and field.

  • Water Spirit (Åmanden): At the water's edge, meet the old stories of the water spirit and hear how people protected themselves with rituals and offerings.

Into the Dark – Guided Dusk Walk

After the abbey closes, the experience continues outdoors. Join a one-hour guided dusk walk through the abbey landscape, stopping at places where the mythical beings were once believed to live.

Along the way, learn ancient protection rituals and folk tips on how to guard against the creatures of the dark. The walk is optional and suitable for both children and adults.
