Take a journey through time by the fjord

When visiting the Frederikssund Museum, Færgegården, you can explore the history of the fjord landscape from prehistory to the present day. Here you will find a vivid narrative about people’s relationship with Roskilde Fjord told through exhibitions, the museum gardens, and the surrounding trails.

The fjord’s history up close
In the permanent exhibition Man and the Fjord, you can discover how life by Roskilde Fjord has changed over thousands of years. Here you encounter stories, artefacts and themes that bring you closer to the people who, throughout time, have drawn food, transport and inspiration from the fjord.

Experiences in exhibitions and nature

The museum offers a variety of events throughout the year, allowing you to dive even deeper into the cultural history of the fjord. The beautiful garden invites you to picnic and play, and you are free to enjoy it – even when the museum itself is closed. Take a cup of coffee from the museum shop outside, or explore the prehistoric trail and the nearby reconstructed settlement.

Activities for children

At Færgegården, children can explore old Danish traditions in a fun and educational way. All year round, the whole family can take part in events inspired by the fjord’s nature, the rhythm of the seasons and people’s relationship with them. During holidays and school breaks, special activities are arranged where children gain insight into old customs and cultural history through play and experiences. Learn, for example, about the traditions of Easter eggs, the midsummer bonfire of Saint John’s Eve, and the Danish folklore figures known as “nisser”.

Archaeological reconstructions

In the area around the museum, you can explore fascinating reconstructions of finds from the region. These include a megalithic tomb, a cult house, a Mesolithic hunters’ camp and a reconstructed ancient road, all giving you an impression of everyday life in the past.
